Philadelphia City Champs Recap

The St. Joe's Prep ultimate team finished their season yesterday at the Philadelphia City Championships. Their first opponent - Delaware Valley Friends School, came out strong, keeping the score at 1-1, and 2-2 at the start. But the Prep's solid defense led by efforts by Tom McCabe '07, and relatively tight offense prevailed and led the Prep to a 13-3 victory over DVFS. Tom McCabe scored the game winner from a long huck from Greg Owens.

Next up was CB East, the hosting team for the tournament, had a visible homefield advantage. The game quickly became a contest of speed pitting on more than one occasion Prep's Matt McCabe '05 against CB East's Eddie Peters. The game seesawed back and forth until 10-9. At which point the Prep scored 3 straight and played incredibly tight defense, again led by efforts of Tom McCabe '07 and layouts by Bill Easton '05. On offense the Prep's superior handler in Mike Panna '05 became evident with quick deep hucks to Matt McCabe '05. The last point was a long ball to sophomore (and next year's captain) Joe Kruse '07 - leading them to a 13-9 victory and putting them in the semifinals for the Philadelphia title.

Their opponent - Cheltenham high school, whom they had faced and lost to two times previously the same season. Even given the odds against them the prep put up a hell of a fight. Layout Ds by the likes of Bill Easton '05 and Joe Kruse '07 kept the prep in a tight match. On offense the in-cuts of Ben Kruse '05 and Bill Easton '05 steadily moved the Prep up the field, and the deep threats of Greg Owens '07 and Matt Paparone '07 provided a consistent huck option for handlers Panna and Jim Ionata '07. But in the end the experience of Chelt's squad (twelve out of the thirteen being seniors and four year veterans of phuel) paid off and the Prep lost 13-8.

This brings the Prep's total record for the Spring season to 15-4. The Prep started their team less than two years ago, only participating in 3 full PHUEL seasons - (Spring 2004, Fall 2004, Spring 2005) with a combined record of 28-16.

Congratulations to our graduating seniors - Terry Casey, Dan Corse, Bil Easton, Ben Kruse, Luke Matthews, Matt McCabe, Garrett McInnes, Mike Panna, and Brian White - Good luck in college and thank you for an awesome 2 years of Prep Ultimate!

Anyone Prep students interested in joining the team are more than welcome to. Information about tryouts for the spring season will be availiable sometime around the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year. For any additional information please talk to any current members of the team.

Over the past two days Prep ultimate team members have logged more than 60 hours of service, serving over 687 meals to homeless men in the city of Philadelphia at St. John's Hospice, and cleaning over 200 gallons of trash from the grounds and surrounding streets of the Prep.

The past two days are just one more testament to the positive impact the SJP Ultimate team makes on the Prep community and the surrounding neighborhood.

The ultimate team invites all friends, family members, extended relatives etc to come to our next game - Saturday, April 2nd @ 12:00pm @ North Wales Fields vs. North Penn high school.
