On Saturday morning, September 24th, the Saint Joe's Prep Ice Hockey teams were invited to "skate in" the ice at the Wachovia Center in preparation for the Flyers first home pre-season game. The team felt that they had made the big time as they parked in the players lot, entered the players entrance and played from the benches that the Flyers would use that night. Special thanks to Joe Kadlec for inviting us. In a game that had no meaning to the Prep's post season seeding and after a three week layoff, the Prep took pride in closing out the regular season with a decisive win and stretched their league unbeaten streak to 12. The Prep opened up the scoring in the first period with Sophomore Ryan Pierce scoring his 6th goal of the season assisted by Sophomore Chris Tanzola. The period ended with the score 1-0 but the Prep seemed to have the upper hand. In the second, the Ice Hawks took a commanding lead with four more unanswered goals. The first scored by Freshman Pat Kupcha (his 7th of the season), assisted by fellow Freshman Frank Goldstein. Then a minute later Sophomore Ernie Menold lit the lamp (his 13th of the season), assisted by Chris Tanzola. Ryan Pierce then scored his 7th on the season again assisted by Chris Tanzola. The fifth goal was scored by Junior Brendan Kenney (his 3rd on the season) assisted by Junior Matt Binck. O'Hara then scored their lone goal to finish the second period 5-1. The third saw the play a little more even with O'Hara notching 9 shots and the Prep 7 but neither team scored and the period ended as it had started with the Prep ahead 5-1. This finishes the regular season and has the Prep finishing first by 5 points over their nearest rival. The single elimination playoff begins on Wednesday March 1st with a 9:30 PM game at Ice Works rink 2 against the winner of the game pitting 8th place Haverford High and 9th place O'Hara Red. Prep Varsity Hands Haverford School First Defeat (2/9/2006) Haverford School brought a 10-0-4 recod into it's meeting with the Prep in a 9:45 game at the Skatium. Haverford School has been compiling a stellar season in outscoring their opponents by a 78 to 31 margin. This was the third meeting of the year between the two clubs. In an even but intensely played first period, there were plenty of hits, shots and saves but neither team could get one in the net. The play continued in this hard hitting physical manner in the second period with the 'fords putting 12 shots on Junior goaltender Justin DePermentier, who had several saves that left the opposition shaking their heads in disbelief. After an "unsportsmanlike conduct" penalty assessed to Haverford School, Junior defenseman Brandon Yorty, skated in from the left point and picked the top corner to score a power play goal with 2 minutes left in the period. The period ended with SJP holding a 1-0 lead. With the momentum in their favor, the Prep stepped up the pressure in the early stages of the third period, and increased the lead to 2-0 on a nice goal by Senior forward James Cristiano. He was assisted by Junior Kevin Melnick and Sophomore Ted Collela. With 5 minutes remaining in the contest and with a man in the penalty box, Haverford School regained some fire when they scored a shorthanded goal to make it 2-1. The Prep knew that it would be a real fight to the finish. While still on the power play, Ted Collela scored a crucial goal off a feed from Senior John Kupcha to give the Hawks some breathing room. Seeing their undefeated season slipping away, the 'fords mounted another attack. At 1:35, Haverford found a way to get within 1 when they scored off a scramble in front of the net. With their goalie pulled and an extra skater on the ice, Haverford School desperately tried to find an open man but were thwarted by a determined and spirited Prep squad in what was their best overall effort of the year. The final regular season game and also Senior night will be on Friday 2/17 at 8:45PM as the Prep takes on O'Hara at the Skatium. Junior Varsity Streak stopped at 8 (12/8) The JV Ice Hawks unbeaten streak was stopped at 8 as they lost a non-league game against Council Rock North at the Class of 23 Rink at Penn. The Prep went out to an early lead as Freshman Jon WIlliams scored assisted by Sophomore Domenic Nucci. The Prep made it a two goal lead with a goal scored by Sophomore Sean McNelis assisted by Domenic Nucci and Jon Williams. Council Rock struck back only 16 secnds latter and the first period ended with the Prep leading, 2-1. THe Prep wnent up by two again with Sophomore Eric Hahn scoring assisted by Freshman Pat Kupcha and Sophomore Ernie Menold. Council Rock again cut it two one four minutes later and the second period also saw the Prep up by one. Unfortunatly the third period scoring was all Council Rock as they tied it up at 6:37 and went ahead at 3:11. The Junior Varsity still has it's league unbeaten streak at 6 but this breaks their overall unbeaten streak. The next game for the JV is another non-league game against St. Mark's on Friday December 16th at 4:45 at The Pond in Newark Delaware. JV Strengthen Their Position on top of EHSHL JV Standings (12/2) The Prep JV remained on top of the EHSHL JV standings by beating the Friars from Monsignor Bonner by a score of 8-2. The Friars were ahead of the Prep in the loss column (but behind in total points) coming into the game. Before this game Bonner had given up only 10 goals in 5 games. Through the close checking first period both teams had a number of chances with the Prep out shooting Bonner 11-8 but the scoreboard still tied at 0-0. The second period immeadiately saw the Prep begin to cash in on their opportunities as they scored three times in three minutes starting with Freshman Pat Kupcha assisted by Freshman Frank Goldstein at 14:31, Sophomore Earnie Menold assisted by Sophomore Domenic Nucci and Sophomore Matt Schwalm at 12:32 and Junior Matt Binck assisted by Junior Brendan Kenney and Sophomore Chris Tanzola at 11:35. This caused Bonner to call a time out to try and re-group. It did not last long as the Prep continued the scoring with Chris Tanzola scoring assisted by Matt Binck and Brendan Kenny and Domenic Nucci scoring assisted by Sophomore Alex Davis. The second period ended with the Prep having a commanding lead 5-0. The third period say the prep score 3 more times to Bonners two. Sophomore Earnie Menold scored unassisted, Pat Kupcha scored his second of the night assisted by Frank Goldstein and Sophomore John Votta and Brendan Kenney scored assisted by Junior Mike McKenzie and Chris Tanzola. Prep Varsity falls in Rematch with Bonner (11/28) In their second meeting of the season, the Hawks faced off against the Friars from Monsignor Bonner at the Skatium on Monday night. In a closely played first period, Bonner notched the only goal mid-way through the opening period. The two teams traded chances and close checking through most of the second period until Bonner broke the game open by scoring three unanswered goals in a span of three minutes. In the third, Senior captain Mike Ostrander intercepted a Bonner pass at the blue line and broke in alone, putting the puck top shelf for an unassisted goal to bring the Prep within three. The battles for the puck continued throughout the remainder of the contest as the game took on a more physical tone. The Hawks pulled Junior goaltender Justin Depermentier in the game's final minutes but were unable to score again. Bonner shot one into the empty Prep net just before the buzzer sounded to result in the final score of 5-1. Bonner also outshot the Prep 26-20. The next game for the varsity is against Haverford High School on Friday December 2nd at 7:00 pm at the Skatium. JV Ice Hawks continue Unbeaten Streak Tie (11/23) The JV Ice Hawks pushed their unbeaten streak to 6 with a 5-3 victory over Haverford High. After playing a scoreless first period, Council Rock notched 3 goals in four minutes during the second period. The Prep entered the third down 3-0 and this came had all the makings of the two games the the Prep and Council Rock played last year where the Prep was beat rather handily. But the Ice Hawks would not roll up in a ball and take this defeat. They score three unanswered coals of their own in a little more than 4 minutes. Freshman Forward Frank Goldstein opened the scoring assisted by Sophomore John Votta. This was followed 35 seconds later by Freshman forward Jon Williams scoring assisted by Sophomore Eric Hahn.
