PREVIOUS GAME SUMMARIES

Varsity Closes Out Season with a Win Over Marple (2/17)

The Prep varsity closed it's regular season schedule with a 4-2 win over Marple-Newtown at the Skatium last night, as both teams recognized their senior player and their parents in a pre-game ceremony. The Prep opened the scoring on a power play goal by James Cristiano off a pass from Mike Winton. Despite the quick start and possibly still showing the effects of a depleted roster, the Prep could not find it's rhythm and surrendered the next two goals to find them selves trailing by a score of 2 - 1 going into the final period. Perhaps fearing a second consecutive loss to a lower ranked opponent, the Prep found enough motivation to notch up their attack as the third period began. The hard work paid off when Mike WInton scored, assists going to Kevin Melnick and Paul Bonhage.  This was then followed by a goal by Mike D'Orio off a nice pass from Mike Ostrander. Capping what would be 3 goals in less than five minutes, Paul Bonhage put a shot past the Marple goalie, assisted by Mike Winton (who had a 3 point night), to finally take control of the game. Prep goaltender Justin DePermentier made all the key stops the rest of the way. The win left the Prep in second place, with a league record of 11-6-1, one point behind league leading Haverford High. The next contest will be a non-league game against Springfield High at 3:15 on Monday February 21st at Aston 4.

Varsity Stunned by Episcopal (2/14)

Playing their next to last game of the regular season, the Prep found themselves on the short end of a 3-2 contest with a spirited Episcopal team in a 9:45 pm game at the Skatium last night. The varsity bench was short six key players due to injury and illness but nonetheless expected to prevail over 4-11-1 Episcopal Academy. The prep jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of first period goals from Mike D'Orio (John Kupcha picked up two assists and Mike Winton picked up one) before seeing their lead vanish in the 3rd period when Episcopal scored three goals in under four minutes. Episcopal Academy took advantage of some defensive zone turnovers and opportunistically converted their limited chances into goals. Overall, the Prep outshot their opponent by 30 - 13 but Episcopal got clutch goaltending from Matt Teti throughout the game. The Prep closes out the regular season with a game at the Skatium versus Marple-Newton on Thursday 2/17 at 9:45 pm. This game will be Senior Night, recognizing our senior players and their parents before the start of the game.

Junior Varsity Wins Quarter Final Playoff Game in OT (2/11)

The Junior Varsity Ice Hawks won an exciting quarter final playoff game against the favored Cardinal O'Hara White team tonight by a score of 3-2. The Prep was seeded sixth in the post season tournament and O'Hara White seeded third. With their only match in regular season ending up a 4-4 tie the Prep expected a tight game and they got it. Much like that regular season game the Prep got out to an early 2-0 lead scoring two goals in the first 3 and one half minutes. The first goal was scored by Sophomore Mike Touey assisted by Freshman Mike Powell. The second just a minute later was an unassisted goal scored by Luke Bonhage. The Prep took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission with the help of goal tender Matt Dougherty turning away all 11 of the O'Hara shots. The second period saw the Prep get called for three penalties in a row. With the prep playing down a man for almost 6 minutes, O'Hara seemed to take the play to the Prep a bit but again Matt Dougherty was up to the challange turning away all 8 of the O'Hara shots. O'Hara finally broke the shut out scoring a goal with 4:14 left in the third period. Pulling the goalie with a little more than a minute left, O'Hara put some pressure on the Prep and converted with just 16 seconds remaining in the game to send the contest into overtime. The overtime saw the play going up and down the ice with each team having a number of chances but with 3:26 left in the first 10:00 minute overtime period, Mike Touey put home his second goal of the night helped by the hard work out front of Brendan Kenney who got himself an assist. None of the Prep fans have any nails left after this one which did not finish up until the early minutes of Saturday morning. Next game will be the semi final round of the JV Playoffs. The game is scheduled for Tuesday 2/22 at Aston 1 at 6:00pm against the Interboro Bucs. With the JV Ice Hawks working their way into the semi-final round they would like to see a big crowd out on Tuesday 2/22 to cheer them on to victory.

Junior Varsity Ends Regular season with Shut-Out (2/5)

The Prep Junior Varsity celebrated the end of their regular season tonight against Cardinal O'Hara Red with a 5-0 shutout. The scoring was started with a tip in goal by Chris Tanzola on a great shot from the point by Alex Davis seven mintes into the first period. This was followed up by a goal by Alex's brother PJ Davis two minutes later assisted by Luke Bonhage and Tyler Dewechter. Luke Bonhage finished the first period scoring scoring a goal with 19 seconds left in the period assisted by Jim O'Brien and Ernie Menold. The second period saw a tight checking game with both teams keeping down the number of shots but Ryan Pierce chipped in two goals just 6 seconds apart, the first assisted by Luke Bonhage and the second assisted by Jim O'Brien. The third period saw the Prep playing a bit conservatively and O'Hara playing their best period of the game but goalie Joe Tordy stopped all 9 shots in the period and all 16 of the game, a number of them through heavy traffic, on his way to his second shut out performance of the season. The win has the JV Ice Hawks finishing 5-6-3 in league games during the 2004-2005 campaign and has them tied for 5th place with Ridley High. Next game will be the first round of the JV Playoffs. The game is scheduled for Friday 2/13 at the Skatium at 10:30pm against Cardinal O'Hara White.

Flu Take's It's toll as Bonner Avenges Earlier Season Loss (2/10)

The Prep went down in a tough 5-0 defeat with three Hawk defensemen doing down with the flu and one to injury during the game. The well played game saw Bonner score their first goal late in a first period that the Prep outshot Bonner 8 - 7. Bonner scored another late period goal in the second period but flu and injuries began to take their toll and the remaining healthy players were beginning to show the signs of being double shifted or playing an unfamiliar position. Bonner was able to take advantage of the depleated Prep team putting home three additional goals in the third period. The next game is Monday 2/14 at 9:45 pm against Episcopal at the Skatium. Come out and support the Varsity Ice Hawks as the regular season enters it's final week. There is no better Valentine's Day date than a trip to the Skatium. Don't forget to buy your Valentine that 24 ounce coffee at the Wawa before you enter the game.

Varsity Ice Hawks Reclaim First Place with Victory Over Haverford High (2/4)

The Varsity Ice Hawks defeated the first place Fords last night in an exciting Friday night hockey game at the Skatium. Haverford had taken the lead in the division away from the Prep in a game earlier in the week. They had the lead in the division but the Prep has one game in hand. The prep fell behind early seeing haverford score two goals in the first period and entered the first intermission with a 2-0 lead. The Prep chipped away at the lead with Paul Bonhage scoring a second period goal to cut the lead in half. The third period started with the score 2-1 and Paul scored with about 10 minutes left to even up the match assisted by Dan O'Brien. There were scoring chances at both ends of the ice as these two very good hockey teams showed their skill and determination. The game looked like it was going to end in a tie when with about 14 seconds Paul Bonhage was sprung behand Haverfords defense. Being taken down from behind and sliding on his stomach across the ice, Paul was able to lift the puck over the Haverford goalie with 7 seconds left to give the Prep the 3-2 victory and Paul a hat natural trick. The next game is Thursday 2/11 at 8:45 pm against AAA Monsignor Bonner at the Skatium. This is shaping up to be an interesting game as Bonner will be trying to avenge a loss to the Ice Hawks earlier this season. Come out and support the Varsity Ice Hawks as the season enters it's final 2 weeks.

Varsity Hopes Dashed against AAA Cardinal O'Hara (1/28)

The Prep took on AAA Cardinal O'Hara for the second time this season with hopes of an upset. These hopes were quickley dashed, however, as O'Hara stormed out to a 4-0 lead in the games first six minutes of play. The Prep tried to dig out from this hole and did get the score to 4-2 on goals by Matt Stewaart assisted by John Kupcha and an unassisted goal by Mike D'Orio.  Dispite a determined effort, it was not a good night for the team and the game ended in a final score of 7-2.  The loss to O'Hara leaves the Prep in a tie for first place in the EHSHL AA division. In other news, the varsity playoff schedule was announced and the varsity was also notified it had been invited to the AAA Flyer's Cup tournament. The varsity faces two tough games in the next two weeks against Haverford and Bonner. The next game is Friday 2/4 at 8:45 pm against Haverford High (AA) at the Skatium. This is an important game as we come down to the final four league games of the season as the top two teams in the division square off. Come out and support the Varsity Ice Hawks as they try and bring home first place in their division.

Next game is Saturday 2/5, against Cardinal O'Hara Red at 10:45 pm at Aston 3.

JV Ice Hawks Suffer Loss at the Hands of O'Hara Blue (1/15)

The Prep JV team suffered a dissappointing loss to Cardinal O'Hara Blue last night. Both teams had difficulty getting much offense going in a close checking first period which saw the Prep outshooting O'Hara 6 to 3 but neither team putting the puck home. In the second period though Cardinal O'Hara special teams put home two power play goals and one short handed goal to take a 3-0 lead before Luke Bonhage put home an unassisted goal with two minutes left in the period. The third period saw the Prep seeming tired in the second game in as many days and the game ended as it had at the end of the second period with the score 3-1. The Ice Hawks tied the score in the second period with an unassisted goal by Sophomore Brendan Kenney. The game went into the third period all even at 1. Haverford managed a goal early in the third to put them up 2 - 1. The Prep continued to work on Haverford and had another goal called off due to a penalty being called 80 feet away at the red line as the Prep's Mike Touey let go a shot on a breakaway that went top shelf. The game ended with the score still 2 - 1 but was probably one of the best skated games by the Prep JV as they played up to Varsity A level.
