Careers in Art

Now more than ever it is possible to make a good living doing something that you really enjoy doing. There are diverse career choices in the visual arts. As we move into the information age good designers are needed in all fields. Some characteristics of an artist are: creative problem solver, design-conscious, experimenter, self-disciplined, visually astute and able to listen to criticism. If you have these qualities or would like to develop them, you should consider a career in art.

Preparing for a career in art requires the creation of a portfolio. Colleges and universities want to have evidence of a strong drawing and design background. Even for computer-based careers drawing skills are extremely important. Drawing is a technical skill that can be learned by anyone who works at it, by doing and seeing. Development of a keenly observant eye takes practice just like any other skill. Design skills relate to using the art elements and principles to make strong and effective visual statements.
